El punto de partida fue un billete de lotería y la promesa de Ramón Acín, líder anarquista, profesor y amigo de Buñuel: ‘si me toca, rodamos el documental´. Y así fue. Buñuel y Acín, junto a Rafael Sánchez Ventura, Pierre Unik y el cámara francés Éli Lotar, se trasladaron a las Hurdes, un fin del mundo remoto y desamparado; una tierra sin pan olvidada y miserable, profecía de la guerra civil que se avecinaba.
Fotografías de archivo de una tierra asolada. Fábricas en medio de una selva, piscinas, hospitales, cientos de árboles talados o calcinados. Las imágenes se suceden mientras la selva suena de fondo. De repente, sonido de tambores aceleran los fotogramas y lo irreal se acentúa.
